The Truth About Paraffin Wax and Why We Avoid It

Candles are more than just fragrance and light. They become part of our rituals, our spaces, and the air we breathe. That’s why the choice of wax matters deeply. At Simple North, we’ve made the conscious decision never to use paraffin wax. Here’s the truth about why.

The Controversy Around Paraffin Wax

Paraffin is the most commonly used candle wax worldwide. It’s inexpensive, widely available, and burns reliably. But paraffin is also a byproduct of petroleum refining. At its core, it’s fossil fuel–derived, which immediately raises concerns about sustainability and environmental impact.

When burned, paraffin candles have been shown to release trace amounts of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) such as toluene and benzene—both associated with indoor air pollution. While some studies minimize the risk, the fact remains that paraffin combustion can contribute to reduced air quality in the home.

Why Sustainability Matters

Beyond air quality, paraffin has a larger environmental cost. Because it is sourced from petroleum, paraffin wax is non-renewable and carries with it the same ecological footprint as fossil fuels: resource depletion, carbon emissions, and dependence on unsustainable extraction practices.

Even so-called “food grade paraffin”—sometimes marketed as safer or more refined—does not change its origin. It may be more purified, but it still begins with petroleum and cannot be considered a sustainable choice.

And here’s something many candle buyers don’t realize: the majority of “luxury” wax blends with names like coconut, apricot, or hemp wax are not 100% natural. They often contain minuscule amounts of food-grade paraffin blended in to improve performance. While small in quantity, it still means the wax carries petroleum roots and isn’t fully renewable or eco-friendly.

Our Commitment to Clean Alternatives

At Simple North, our philosophy is rooted in nature and intentional living. We choose natural, plant-based waxes because they:

  • Burn cleaner with less soot and smoke.
  • Align with eco-friendly, renewable sourcing.
  • Avoid hidden paraffin blends.
  • Support our mission of creating safe, sustainable products you can trust.

Our candles are poured with integrity, using waxes and fragrances that allow you to enjoy the warmth of a flame without second-guessing what’s being released into your home or how it impacts the earth.

A Candle You Can Trust

Choosing not to use paraffin isn’t about fear—it’s about values. It’s about creating candles that reflect care for your well-being, your space, and the environment we all share.

That’s why every Simple North candle is paraffin-free. Clean, natural, and intentionally crafted—just as it should be.
